"Suicide in B flat" is a meditation on the anxiety of inherited cultural influence, as well as a cryptic lament about the paradoxes of stardom. Written on the slipstream of dime-store mysteries and post-bob jazz, the play centers on Niles, an experimental composer at the end of creative streak who commits ritual “suicide” to free himself from the confines of his own legendary status. Like the real-life Miles Davis or Bob Dylan on whom he is based, Niles must find a way to “disappear” in order to recreate himself and keep his artistic vision alive.
